What is Wood Badge?

For over 25 years the Knox Trail Council, Mohegan Council, and Nashua Valley Council have collaborated to offer Wood Badge training to Scouting leaders from all three councils. Knox Trail Council is pleased to invite you to join us at Camp Resolute for our next Wood Badge course. Wood Badge is a residential leadership training opportunity for volunteers in Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting and Venturing. It is designed to enhance each leader’s team development, program planning, and problem-solving skills.

Since the first course offered in 1919 by Lord Robert S.S. Baden-Powell at Gilwell Park, near London, England, over 100,000 leaders around the world have completed this course.

Who can enroll?

Leaders active in Cub Scout packs, Boy Scout troops, Varsity Scout teams and Venturing crews are invited to enroll, as well as Scouters serving youth at the district and council level. While this course is being offered by the Scout Councils in central Massachusetts, any registered Scouter can sign up.

Is previous training required?

Participants should have completed basic training for their current position in Scouting. The course is based in the outdoors, and participants should be comfortable and expect to be in a camping environment. Therefore, you should also complete the outdoor skills training for your position. Prior to 2001 many leaders became trained through the Cub Leader Basic and Scout Leader Basic Training courses, or through the Scoutmastership Fundamentals training. These leaders are also qualified to attend Wood Badge training.

What is covered in the Wood Badge Course?

The central themes of Wood Badge are:

  • Living the Values: mission, aims, methods, and values of Scouting

  • Bringing the Vision to Life: listening to learn, communicating, feedback, leveraging diversity, coaching and mentoring

  • Models for Success: team development, situational leadership

  • Tools of the Trade: project planning, problem-solving, managing conflicts, assessing performance, leading change

  • Leading to Make a Difference: leaving a legacy

What should I expect to learn?

By the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • View Scouting globally, as a fun and exciting family of interrelated, values-based programs for youth.

  • Be able to apply new “tools of the trade” to your current leadership position in Scouting.

  • Become part of a network of supportive Scouters who can assist you in creating, leading and advising high performing teams back home.

  • Be inspired to improve the lives of young people in your area.

How long does the Wood Badge course last?

Wood Badge consists of two phases. The first is the practical phase, consisting of two three-day weekends (Friday morning at 8am through Sunday afternoon at 5pm) at camp, plus one or two patrol meetings between the weekends. The second phase, the application phase, begins after the two weekends and consists of achieving goals that you have set, related to your Scouting position. This phase generally takes from 6 to 18 months. Upon satisfactory completion of this phase, the Wood Badge award is presented.
